The Godfather

The Godfather custom typewriter, one of my personal favorites because I am a fan of the movies.

This 1965 Olympia SM9, hand painted, fully restored machine is the same style machine Mario Puzo wrote the book on which ties it nicely to the art.

Not only a unique tribute to the writer, but a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola and the collaboration that earned 3 Academy Awards.

Iconic.  This movie is still considered one of the great movies of our time.  I never had the full appreciation for it until I was a little older, but after taking it all in, I was enthralled at the drama and story that was unfolding on the screen.

The cast was pretty incredible with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and Talia Shire and one of my personal favorite actors of the time, John Cazale.

When designing the artwork on the machine, I wanted to incorporate as many key characters as I could, but keep a simple clean look.  I always liked the original movie poster and wanted to keep black and white high contrast to give a vintage look.  There is 8 portraits on this machine including a young Vito Corleone played by Robert DeNiro in The Godfather part 2.  Even though he wasn’t in the original movie, I wanted to have a young Vito looking toward his future, so that is the very front top ribbon cover.

The machine is a 1965 Olympia SM9 which is the same style and model machine that Mario Puzo actually wrote the book on.  This made it a very specific custom and we were really happy to pay tribute to the movie and the author in one piece of art.  It’s really great that the machine has white keys because it kept it tied to the colour design of the typewriter.
